DIY Silent Tic Tac Toe Game

Thank you Salma, for the wonderful opportunity. I’m really excited to share this wonderful DIY tutorial with you and your awesome readers! Let's start!

Hello, there! I have a question for you.

When was the last time you played the evergreen game of Tic Tac Toe? Long time, ha? Well, then today I'm going to throw some NEW lights on it. Almost everyone has played Tic Tac Toe or Xs and Os in childhood. And has gone through the struggle to win it with friends and family. I remember playing Tic Tac Toe competitions with my school besties. And wonder how we all discovered tricks to win the game.

The silent Tic Tac Toe game I'm talking about is a fun DIY project everyone would like to be a part of. I said it 'quiet' because there won't be fights for paper and color pens anymore. (And mom you won't be disturbed now!) The best thing I like about this DIY Tic Tac Toe is that it is foldable and portable! And hence is a perfect partner while travelling, especially with kids. This portable Tic Tac Toe is a great way to keep nagging kids (and adults) engaged for some time. So here are the easy steps to make the silent DIY Tic Tac Toe Game!

Materials:
1.     Felt sheets - A4 size, 3 nos.
2.     Fillers - Fibre / cotton / scrap fabric
3.     Matching threads
4.     Needle
5.     Pair of scissor
6.     Button
7.     Glue

I picked two bright colored felt sheets, pink for 'Xs' and yellow for 'Os'. And the third felt sheet (grey) for Tic Tac Toe board and holder.
1. Making 'X' - First I made 5.5cm * 5.5cm square. Then I marked 1.5cm from every corner on the each side and drew diagonal lines connecting all the marked points. (Refer the below picture)

2. Making 'O' - I used a circular toy as the stencil which has approximately 5cm diameter. Then using a smaller circular toy I made another circle inside the large circle. It has approximately 2cm of diameter

To create X and O shapes cut through the red lines shown above. Using this method I made 10 Xs (from squares) and 10 Os (from circles) from the felt sheets.

3. Once all cutting was done, I paired two Xs and started stitching them using the blanket stitch. I used this tutorial for blanket stitching. You can use any other stitching pattern or even use glue to speed up the process. I choose to stitch as it creates the design on the edges and gives extra finishing to the shapes.
I only stitched three sides of the X and kept one side open to stuff fillers. Similarly, for Os I first stitched inner circle completely and then the half outer circle.

4. After filling enough filler, I stitched the open sides of Xs and Os. The major portion of the project was ready by now.

5. I marked nine squares of 7cm * 7cm on the A4 size felt sheet. That is three row and three columns. I kept the remaining part of the board for next step.

6. As I intended to make the game portable, a pocket was needed to store all Xs and Os. And so I kept the remaining part of the Tic Tac Toe board (grey felt) to make the pocket.
For the pocket, I made an 8cm * 21cm rectangle and two 6cm * 7cm rectangles out of the pink felt sheet. These two rectangles will be the expandable sides of the pocket. The yellow strip will be used in next step. (If you need more explanation about the process, toss your question in the comments below.)

7. Using the yellow felt strip I simply cut thin strips (2mm each) and glued them along the black lines on the grey felt paper.
The Tic Tac Toe board measures 21cm * 21cm. And the pocket measures 8cm * 21cm. Follow the graphic below to make the pocket.

The final output looked very attractive and cute. Everyone in the family loved it. It is such a fun playing with it again.

The all new Tic Tac Toe is a great pass-time for kids as well as for adults. I'm pretty sure that kids will love to play this traditional Tic Tac Toe game on a new platform! Also, this is the great way to entertain the whole family (and yourself) while travelling or even in parties! Where else will you like to use the brand new Tic Tac Toe game? Tell us in the comments below!

Once again I thank Salma for the wonderful opportunity to connect with her readers. I hope you all liked this tutorial and would send me the pictures of the project on my social media accounts. Till then, cya!

  1. This is adorable! You could make it car-friendly for kiddos too, by putting some velcro on the back of your x's and o's :)
